Directories and Trade Records for Lurgan
Many of the directories we have available here were originally transcribed by Martin McGoldrick and we were lucky enough to rescue the vast amount of work he did and reproduce it here. Many others have been added since. We are also in the process of transcribing other records that we have acquired from donations by our followers. Some of the transcripts only give a name and the town or in some cases the parish. We have reproduced here all of the information that is avaialble to us. Hopefully this will be enough to help you pinpoint your search.
The Brownlow Papers consist of 520 volumes and c.9,300 numbered documents.
With some exceptions, they can be described as an estate archive, documenting the history and management of the Brownlows' estate. It relates largely to their land in the manors of Brownlowsderry and Richmount in the Lurgan area, including Lurgan town. The period we have covered so far is from 1755 to 1766.
Street and Trade directories, such as Pigot’s Directory of 1824 and the Belfast and Province of Ulster street directories from the mid 19th, contain brief histories of towns and lists of local gentry, businessmen and tradesmen, thereby providing a good starting point for exploring the social structure of a town.
Slaters' directory goes through the towns of Ireland alphabetically. It lists a detailed description of the town or city, post office information and shows the names of nobility and gentry living in or close to the town. The traders of each town are arranged according to their trade. Slater's directory contains some additional information that is not found in the Pigot's Directory
We are currently building a database of names in all of the directories shown here, but as you can probably imagine, this is a mammoth task and we are adding new names daily. You can search through the names available in the search engine below. If you have any records for the Lurgan area that you would like us to publish here, please contact us via the link below.
We make this information freely available to genealogists and Family Historians, but at no time may this information be used on a pay site or sold for profit.

The information on this website is free and will always be so. However, there are many documents and records that we would like to show here that are only available for sale. If you would like to make a donation to the Lurgan Ancestry project, however small (or large!), to enable us to acquire these records, it would be very much appreciated.
